Free Eye Tests for People with a Family History of Glaucoma

If you are aged 40 or over AND have a close relative (parent, sibling, child) with glaucoma, you would be entitled to a free NHS sight test.
Glaucoma often has no symptoms, and so it is best to have your eyes checked regularly so it can be picked up early.
Why family history matters
Having a family link to glaucoma increases your risk of developing the condition. Early detection is vital because treatment can help slow or prevent sight loss.
In fact, in a recent survey of our members, over 65% told us they discovered they had glaucoma through a free eye test at their local optician.
Who is eligible for free NHS sight tests?
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, you may qualify for a free NHS sight test if:

  • You’re aged 60 or over
  • You’ve been diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma
  • You’re under 16, or under 19 and in full-time education
  • You’re 40 or over and have a close relative with glaucoma
  • You are registered blind or partially sighted
  • You (or your partner) receive certain benefits, or you’re under 20 and dependent on someone who does

👉 Even if you don’t qualify (for example, if only a grandparent has glaucoma), it’s still important to have regular check-ups if you can — they can prevent unnecessary sight loss.
